Liverpool handed Premier League fixture advantage ahead of crucial Manchester United clash

Manchester United's game in hand against Burnley will take place in the midweek before their clash with Liverpool in the Premier League.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side will play Sean Dyche's men on Tuesday, January 12 at Turf Moor before travelling to Anfield the following Sunday.

Manchester United were reportedly keen on the game taking place then in order to give them the chance to move level on points with Liverpool ahead of the game, as long as both sides pick up three points in their matches before then.

Liverpool play Southampton on Monday night, while United have Aston Villa tomorrow, with Carabao Cup and FA Cup rounds making up the fixture list before the two heavyweight sides meet.

The Premier League's rearrangement means that Liverpool will have a free week heading into the clash with Manchester United, with their FA Cup tie with Aston Villa on Friday, January 8.

That means Jurgen Klopp's men face a nine-day gap between matches - a day longer than between their 7-0 win over Crystal Palace and their disappointing draw with West Brom - though they will have a full week of training to prepare.

A trip to Burnley is never an easy one to make and Manchester United lost 2-0 at Old Trafford against the Clarets in the last meeting between the sides.

The fixture will also give them four fewer days to prepare for what is shaping up to be a crucial match in the title race.
