Liverpool handed new Man City challenge as European chance emerges

Liverpool's youngsters will have two further routes in which to impress with the return of the UEFA Youth League and Premier League U18 Cup this season.

Both competitions weren't played last term due to restrictions regarding the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Liverpool's qualification for the Champions League means an under-19s side are in a UEFA Youth League group that mirrors the first-team draw of Atletico Madrid, Porto and AC Milan.

And the Reds have been drawn in Group C of the Premier League U18 Cup alongside holders Manchester City, Crystal Palace and Aston Villa.

The seven group winners and the best runners-up will progress to the quarter-finals.

The UEFA Youth League has helped the development of a number of Academy graduates with Harvey Elliott, Curtis Jones, Caoimhin Kelleher and Neco Williams all having shone in the 2019/20 tournament before Liverpool were eventually beaten 4-1 by Benfica in the round of 16.

Kaide Gordon, James Balagizi, Tyler Morton, Conor Bradley and Mateusz Musialowski are among the Reds youngsters who will be eligible for the competition this season.

Liverpool's best run was in 2017/18 when they were eliminated at the quarter-final stage by Manchester City on penalties.

No decision has yet been taken on where the Reds will play their home games, although St Helens' rugby league stadium has been the venue in recent years.
