Liverpool handed major Joel Matip injury boost ahead of Manchester United

Joel Matip has handed Liverpool a major boost by returning to full training ahead of the weekend clash with Manchester United.

Matip was among those pictured as the Reds were put through their paces at Kirkby on Friday in preparation for Sunday's match at Anfield.

The Cameroonian has been absent for the last three games having limped off against West Bromwich Albion on December 27 with an adductor problem.

Jurgen Klopp spoke earlier in the day of giving Matip every chance of being available for the visit of Premier League leaders United.

And the Reds will hope the centre-back comes through a final session on Saturday and persuade Klopp he can line up alongside Fabinho at the heart of defence.

Otherwise, the Liverpool boss will choose between Rhys Williams, Nat Phillips and Jordan Henderson to partner the Brazilian.

Another notable presence at Kirkby was Kostas Tsimikas, who hasn't featured since suffering a knee injury during the Champions League dead rubber at FC Midtjylland on December 9.

Liverpool can return to the Premier League summit on goal difference ahead of United if they win what will be Klopp's 200th league game in charge of the club.
