Liverpool handed major double fitness boost ahead of Premier League return

Liverpool are hopeful captain Jordan Henderson and defender Joel Matip will return from injury in time for the first Premier League game of the season.

Both players are said to be making good progress on their return from injury as they continue with rehabilitation programmes.

The pair have flown out to Austria to join up with the Reds ' pre-season training camp as they work their way back to full fitness.

Henderson suffered a knee injury during the 3-1 win at Brighton on July 8 while Matip has not been seen in action since since picking up a foot problem back in June against Everton.

Manager Jurgen Klopp has since explained that they will be back "in the early stages of the new season."

"[It's] good," the German boss told the club's official website.

"Both are very positive, both are more or less pain-free now. Now they have to adapt just to the intensity and they do that with the fitness coaches and not with us.

"In the moment when they give us the green light then they are back in team training.

"How I said, we should not rush it in the moment. I would love to have both in the squad obviously but in the moment it's not possible.

"So they will be back in the early stages of the new season. Hopefully for the first match already."
