Liverpool handed Champions League omen thanks to Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo

Liverpool fans have spotted an omen that it could be their year in the Champions League after the Reds beat RB Leipzig on Wednesday night.

Jurgen Klopp 's side are currently at risk of missing out on qualifying for Europe's elite competition next season after dropping to eighth in the Premier League table.

However, if they miss out domestically, they kept their hopes of qualifying as European champions alive after reaching the quarter-finals of this year's tournament.

Goals from Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane in Budapest saw Liverpool clinch a 4-0 aggregate victory over the Bundesliga outfit to progress in the competition.

However, while the Reds booked their place in the final eight of the competition, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo will both miss out for the first time since the 2004/05 season as their Barcelona and Juventus sides were knocked out by PSG and Porto respectively.

Messi was on the scoresheet as Barca drew 1-1 in Paris but the Spanish team suffered a 5-2 aggregate loss on Wednesday, while Ronaldo's side won 3-2 AET against Porto in their second leg in Turin on Tuesday, only to exit the competition on away goals following a 4-4 draw.

Liverpool famously won the tournament during the aforementioned 2004/05 season, succeeding on penalties against AC Milan after fighting back from 3-0 in Istanbul.

And with the 2021 final offering the Reds the chance to return to the Ataturk Stadium in Turkey, the potential omen was not lost on fans as they dared to dream of their side revisiting the site of one of their most famous victories and claiming a seventh European Cup title.
