Liverpool handed boost as Timo Werner transfer option 'ruled out'

Liverpool appear to have been handed a boost in their reported pursuit of Red Bull Leipzig striker Timo Werner.

The Reds have been frequently linked with a move for the 24-year-old frontman, who is believed to have a £52m release clause in his contract.

The German has attracted interest from across Europe, with Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester United touted as potential suitors.

Liverpool's admiration for Werner is well known - and it remains to be seen whether they will make concrete their interest in the player.

And in news which could be a positive for Liverpool, reports from Germany suggest Bayern is no longer an option for Werner.

According to Bild, Werner has "ruled out" a transfer to another Bundesliga team.

The German paper claims Bayern will instead now pursue a deal for Manchester City winger Leroy Sane.

Bayern will reportedly offer €70m to Man City for Sane’s services, although Pep Guardiola’s side are thought to be holding out for a fee closer to €85m.

The report goes on to state that Werner prefers a move to Liverpool to work with Jurgen Klopp.

Werner has been in fine form for Leipzig this season, bagging 27 goals in 36 appearances in all competitions, including 25 in the Bundesliga.

It remains to be seen how it will all unfold - especially given the uncertainty surrounding when the transfer window will open as the world tries to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic.
