Liverpool had no answer as Kalvin Phillips' 'incredible' Premier League debut for Leeds United hailed

Former Manchester City and England defender Micah Richards has hailed Kalvin Phillips' performance for Leeds United on his Premier League debut.

The Whites were playing their first top-flight match for 16 years when they travelled to Anfield to face Liverpool, playing out a seven-goal thriller.

While Marcelo Bielsa's travelled back from Merseyside without any points on the board, they earned plenty of plaudits for their display.

Among those being hailed after the match was Phillips, who pulled the strings in midfield against the defending champions, and Richards was among those issuing praise.

"Oh, what a Premier League debut. Brilliant. He picks up some great positions. He has a lot of time and space, almost like a quarterback," he said on BBC's Match of the Day 2.

"I was so intrigued to watch him in these positions to see if he could do it in the Premier League. A lot of the positions he picks up, it looked as though Liverpool didn’t know what to do with him.

"Every time he gets the ball, first thing he thinks is ‘let’s get forward’. He plays with conviction. I was just intrigued to see how it would work for him at this level and it was so comfortable. It’s incredible for him to do that."
