Liverpool got better part of Emre Can deal despite Juventus selling for £20million

On the face of things it would appear Juventus pulled off a coup signing Emre Can for free and than selling him on two years later for €25million.

But the transfer saga actually ended up costing the Italian giants, despite them seemingly getting one over Liverpool.

Back in 2018, Serie A champions Juventus signed Can when his contract expired at the end of the season.

In order to temp the German away from Liverpool, who were keen for him to sign a new contract at Anfield, the Old Lady had to stump up the cash.

A statement from Juventus at the time confirmed the Italian's paid Can a massive signing-on fee of £14million.

"Emre Can has signed with the Bianconeri to officially join the club on July 1, 2018 on a four-year deal," read the statement.

"As a result of the signature of the agreement, Juventus will incur additional costs of €16million [£14million] to be paid over the next two financial years."

According to the Liverpool Echo, Juventus also agreed to pay Can a whopping £4million-a-season in wages.

In the two years he was in Italy Can therefore made £8million. This, added to his signing-on fee, means he earned a staggering £22million in total.

Dortmund confirmed they have triggered a clause in Can's loan deal on Tuesday, making the transfer a permanent one.

They will now pay the Italian's €25million, which is just over £20million, meaning Juventus lost around £2million on the Can saga.
