Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet 'revitalised' by Alisson Becker - but told to leave this summer

Simon Mignolet has been urged to leave Liverpool - despite being "revitalised" by the arrival of Alisson Becker in place of Loris Karius.

Mignolet made just two appearances this season as understudy to Alisson, who became first choice since arriving from Roma for £65million last summer.

The Belgian had been a regular under Jurgen Klopp until losing his place to Karius in January 2018, and could only watch from the bench as the German suffered a personal nightmare in the Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid four months later.

With Karius since sent to Besiktas on loan, Mignolet claimed a Champions League winners' medal on Saturday as an unused substitute in the 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur in Madrid.

Mignolet is currently with the Belgium squad preparing for the forthcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers against Kazakhstan and Scotland.

And Erwin Lemmens, the national team's goalkeeping coach, has praised the Liverpool man for his response following the arrival of Alisson.

"I have a lot of respect for Simon," he said. "He's a real professional. Few are able to give their lives for their work. And that's what he does.

"He was able to revitalise himself with the arrival of Alisson - he is one of the top goalkeepers in the world.

"Karius was no better than Simon a year ago, and it was not fair to have a less good goalkeeper than him in his place. I supported Simon a lot at the World Cup (in 2018). Being present in this great tournament did him good.

"He earned his stripes in the national team. I'm sure he'll want to keep his place for as long as possible."

Mignolet spoke to the ECHO earlier this year when he intimated he could accept being understudy to Alisson compared to his stint as number two to Karius.

Nevertheless, the 31-year-old is pondering his future having played only three senior club games in almost 18 months.

And Lemmans, speaking to La Libre, added: "The time has come to leave. I'm sure he'll find a good club. He must regain the pleasure of playing."
