Liverpool goalkeeper makes future admission after 'tougher' competition

Adrian has vowed to keep fighting for his Liverpool place despite falling down the goalkeeping pecking order.

The Spaniard has featured for the Reds first team just once in almost 12 months having been usurped by Caoimhin Kelleher as understudy to first-choice Alisson Becker.

The 34-year-old agreed a new contract in the summer to extend his Anfield stay having won medals in the Premier League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup in his debut 2019/20 season.

But he has made the bench only four times this campaign with his last outing coming in the 2-0 Premier League win at Sheffield United in February.

Reports in Spain have linked the keeper with a return to former club Betis, rumours of which Adrian was asked when appearing on Radio Marca Sevilla.

"It is not that you want it or not, it is that the circumstances are right," said the Liverpool shot-stopper.

"Last time, Betis were looking for a goalkeeper and I was free. I got the chance of Liverpool and look, I signed and have already been here for three seasons.

"I will continue fighting there, the competition is getting tougher. But I like challenges and I'm still hard at work. What comes in the future we will see."

Both Kelleher and Adrian are vying for a start after the international break with doubts over whether Alisson will be able to feature at Watford due to a potential late arrival from Brazil, and then Atletico Madrid due to quarantine issues.
