Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius on verge of completing loan deal

Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius is on the verge of a season-long loan move to Union Berlin.

The German is expected to complete the formalities of the deal early next week to return to his homeland with the Bundesliga side.

Karius, 27, has endured a turbulent four years since joining Liverpool in summer 2016.

Signing from Mainz, he battled with Simon Mignolet to become Anfield number one before making two high-profile mistakes in the 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League final in 2018.

Jurgen Klopp would move for Alisson in a £65m switch from Roma that summer and Liverpool sanctioned a two-year loan deal for Karius to move to Besiktas.

But Karius' time in Turkey would end in controversy when he cancelled his contract with the Istanbul-based club.

Karius was involved in a  dispute with the Turkish side over unpaid wages  and Liverpool were later left baffled by the criticism  of their goalkeeper by his own manager, Senol Gunes.

The player's agent Florian Goll then told German media his client was  being made a scapegoat  by Besiktas, adding: “I strongly condemn the fact that club representatives now want to portray Loris as a bogeyman."

Karius explained his Besiktas departure in an open letter to supporters on social media earlier this year.

The move to Union Berlin represents a new start for a player who had been highly rated during his time with Mainz.

He has two years remaining on his contract at Anfield.
