Liverpool given unexpected Champions League boost after Man Utd fixture change

Liverpool's Champions League hopes may have received a shot in the arm after their clash with Manchester United was placed at the end of a nightmare run of fixtures for the Red Devils.

After their Europa League semi-final against Roma on Thursday night, United go to Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday and then host Leicester at Old Trafford just over 48 hours later on the Tuesday.

Then, just over 48 hours later again, it is Liverpool who come to Old Trafford for the rearranged Premier League game on the Thursday, May 13.

Playing United at the end of such a hectic run of fixtures must surely be an advantage for Liverpool, who by contrast to United's busy period will only have played one game in almost three weeks by the time they take on their old rivals.

It is believed that West Brom are said to have been responsible for United's fixture pile-up, with the Baggies not willing to move their own game with Liverpool forward to next midweek.

If Sam Allardyce's side had agreed to moving their fixture against the Reds forward from May 16, something Liverpool were willing to do, then United could have faced the Reds on that day.

But with West Brom battling to avoid relegation they wanted a full week to prepare for the visit of Liverpool following on from their trip to Arsenal this Sunday evening.

The postponement of last Sunday's match at Old Trafford also means that Manchester City can now secure the Premier League title if they beat their Champions League final opponents Chelsea at the Etihad on Saturday evening.

A City win would also be cheered by Liverpool, who would then move just four points behind Chelsea with a game in hand should they beat Southampton at Anfield on Saturday night.
