Liverpool 'given hope' of Champions League return against Real Madrid

Gini Wijnaldum believes Liverpool have given themselves hope of salvaging their season by their performance in Champions League elimination.

The Reds dominated Real Madrid in their quarter-final second leg at Anfield on Wednesday but couldn't find a breakthrough, with a goalless draw consigning them to a 3-1 aggregate defeat.

Jurgen Klopp's side will now turn their focus to ensuring a return to the Champions League as they look to close three-point gap to the top four with seven Premier League games remaining.

And of Liverpool's display against Real, Wijnaldum said: "For sure, that will give us hope. That's what we have to do - stay confident and work hard to still bring this season to a good end.

"Everything was there on the pitch - position play, counter-press, created chances - but the one thing that wasn't there was goals.

"It would have been much different if we'd score early, it would have given us more confidence and made it difficult for them as they'd know we only needed one goal.

"The biggest regret we have right now is the first leg, the goals we gave away. But that's the Champions League - you play against good teams and when you play like we did there, you get punished."

Wijnaldum, speaking to liverpoolfc.com, admits the Premier League champions would have benefited from supporters being present against Real.

"The Champions League nights are really special, but during the Premier League also because they are so vital for this club and team," he said.

"I really believe if we had fans this season then we would probably deal better with situations as they give the team an extra boost and help the team go forward when in difficult situations.

"Everyone is looking forward to fans being back in as that would help us a lot."
