Liverpool given further hope of £20m transfer boost as contract intrigue continues

Former Liverpool forward Luis Alberto scored the winner for Lazio against Fiorentina last night to keep their Serie A title dream alive.

Alberto, 27, has played a key role in an unlikely charge this season which has Simone Inzaghi and his team four points behind reigning champions Juventus at the top of the table.

As the ECHO reported at the time, a Michael Edwards masterstroke saw a clause inserted in the deal that initially took Alberto to Lazio in 2016.

The Reds managed to secure a 30% sell-on fee arrangement for the midfielder's next move.

His good form this term led to reports that Lazio would demand £69m for his services in a move that would net Liverpool more than £20m.

But the Italian outfit are said to be hopeful of sealing fresh terms with Alberto to deny Jurgen Klopp an additional boost to his transfer kitty.

Alberto raised further intrigue around his future earlier this month after taking to social media to deny claims he had signed a new deal.

"Did someone sign in my place?! It wasn’t me," he said.

In March, Alvaro Torres - said to be a representative for Alberto - added: "Last year [he] was one of the best players in Serie A and this year he's the best.

"We're happy and speaking to him a lot and want to agree a renewal."

Yet with another important goal scored - and the title charge continuing - suitors from across Europe could attempt to force Lazio's hand - and offer Liverpool a financial boost.
