Liverpool given extra motivation to return to Champions League final

Next season’s Champions League final will be held at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul after UEFA announced its plans for the current campaign to resume.

This seasons final was set to take place in the Turkish capital but due to the coronavirus pandemic, the match will now take place at the Estadio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica or the Estádio José Alvalade, both in Portugal.

Final venues have been forced to host the game a year later than originally agreed on because of the rescheduling of games.

The stadium in Istanbul, where Liverpool were crowned European champions for a fifth time in 2005, will be the venue for next campaign’s final instead.

The Reds will now be hoping for an emotional return to the iconic stadium after initially losing that chance after a two-leg defeat to Atletico Madrid in March.

The following season will see a trip to the Saint Petersburg Stadium in Russia for the two strongest teams.

The 2022/23 final will be played at the Football Arena Munich in Germany, with Wembley being the venue for the next season.

UEFA released the upcoming Champions League final venues after its announcement to play out the rest of the 2019/20 season as a straight knockout tournament.

The competition will resume on August 7, with the majority of games - at least - taking place in Lisbon, Portugal.

The ties will all be single-leg fixtures, with a decision on where the remaining four round of 16 second-legs will take place - either at the home team’s stadium or in Portugal also.

The Reds’ home defeat to Atletico on March 11, alongside Paris Saint-Germain’s home victory over Borussia Dortmund, were the last two games played in the competition before the season was put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Here is the initial schedule for the remaining games this season:

August 7-8: Round of 16 second-legs (venues to be confirmed)

August 12-15: Quarter-finals (Lisbon)

August 18-19: Semi-finals (Lisbon)

August 23: Final (Lisbon)
