But that England are blessed with a plethora of world-class players and right-back talents is perhaps one of the most remarkable occurrences.
At least, that is, if Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate is the true barometer of quality regards those at his disposal.
How else to explain the fact that, barely a week before Southgate confirms his squad for the European Championships, doubts remain over Trent Alexander-Arnold's involvement?
Astonishing that the Reds defender would almost certainly not make a regular 23-man party. But it's barely believable that, with Southgate afforded an extra three picks for the finals, the indication is there is still likely to be no room for the 22-year-old.

Thomas Tuchel makes 'wrong decision' admission
Thomas Tuchel doesn't believe Alisson Becker's last-gasp winner for Liverpool against West Brom was a major setback to his Chelsea side’s Champions League hopes.
However, the Brazilian’s goal has left Tuchel questioning his own superstitions after he avoided watching the action at The Hawthorns.
The Reds won a corner in the final minute of stoppage time and Alisson rose to glance Trent Alexander-Arnold's delivery into the far corner of the net.
And Tuchel has opened up on how he returned home to find the game was 1-1 and avoided watching it, only to discover a short while later Alisson had secured the Reds all three points.
