Liverpool given Champions League assurance but Premier League heartbreak predicted

Liverpool will fail to defend their Premier League title this season, but will go far in the Champions League, according to a leading sports supercomputer.

The Reds are now seven points adrift of table-topping Manchester City following Wednesday night's disappointing 1-0 defeat to Brighton at Anfield.

It's the second successive home match that Jurgen Klopp's side have lost and despite impressive results against Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United recently, the mass amount of injuries are unsurprisingly taking its toll on the champions.

Liverpool face City on Sunday afternoon and it's a chance for the Reds to move within four points of Pep Guardiola's men - who do have a game in hand.

However, it's set to be a huge task for Klopp 's men, with City currently on a 13-game winning run in all competitions.

According to FiveThirtyEight, City will reclaim the title from Liverpool - who are predicted to finish in third-place.

Manchester United, who are currently second in the table, will finish runners-up to their city rivals and above the Reds for the first time since the 2017/18 season, according to the predictor.

Liverpool have just a 4% chance of winning the title, with United having a 7% opportunity and City boasting an 88% probability of being crowned champions.

However, the same supercomputer has predicted the Reds to still go far in Europe.

While City are deemed favourites - with a 33% chance - Klopp's side are likely to reach the semi-finals, the predictor claims.

The six-times champions of Europe have a 9% chance of 'winning the final', while Bayern Munich and Barcelona both have the same opportunity (14%).

Liverpool face German side RB Leipzig in the Round of 16 in the prestigious European competition, with the first-leg on February 16. Then the 2018/19 champions welcome Leipzig to Anfield on March 10.
