Liverpool given Anfield decision as Premier League schedule becomes clearer

Liverpool will play the remainder of this season's home games at Anfield after a decision was taken on the Merseyside derby.

The game with Everton on Sunday, June 21 will take place at Goodison after the Ground Safety Advisory Group met on Wednesday to give the fixture the green light.

The 236th derby, which kicks off at 7pm, is the first game back for Jurgen Klopp's side with the Premier League campaign having been suspended since March 13 due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Football's police chief Mark Roberts had identified the fixture as potentially having to be played at a neutral venue with fears crowds could gather outside the ground, with the game being played behind closed doors.

But with all remaining games on Merseyside now being permitted, it means Liverpool can host their remaining home games against Crystal Palace, Aston Villa, Burnley and Chelsea.

A statement from Liverpool said: "Liverpool Football Club welcomes the decision by the local Ground Safety Advisory Group to support football matches being played behind closed doors on Merseyside.

"Following already positive discussions with key partners including Liverpool City Council, Merseyside Police, Spirit of Shankly, Everton Football Club and Blue Union we have committed to working together to restart the season safely with the overriding aim of ensuring these games are completed by prioritising public health so the return to football is a success for Merseyside.

"These discussions are very much part of our normal match day planning and arrangements.

"Further dialogue between all partners is scheduled this week and together will provide clear and regular updates for supporters throughout this process.

"We would like to thank the Chair, the elected members of GSAG, and all those people who have been working tirelessly in the background for their support as we take the next step to completing the 2019/20 Premier League season."

Liverpool, though, are still waiting to discover if their trip to Manchester City on July 2 will take place at the Etihad or be moved to a neutral venue.

Their final game of the season at Newcastle United on July 26 is another that could be switched.
