Liverpool get 'lucky' title boost amid Man City battle - leaving Jamie Carragher and fans baffled

Liverpool benefited from a 'lucky' decision when they were leading 2-1 at Newcastle, and it could have a huge impact on the Premier League title race.

That's according to Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher and Manchester City fans, who both agree that Trent Alexander-Arnold should have been sent off for a handball in the lead up to Newcastle's equaliser by Christian Atsu.

Virgil van Dijk gave Liverpool the lead before Alexander-Arnold cleared the ball off the line with his elbow, only for Atsu to strike. The goal was given and Alexander-Arnold's perceived offence went unpunished.

It was made worse just eight minutes later when the Liverpool defender provided a delightful cross for Mohamed Salah to put the Reds back in front. This left Carragher commenting on the title luck his former side had received.

"He (Alexander-Arnold) has got away with one there," Carragher explained during Sky Sports' commentary. "He handballs it and it should have been a red card and a penalty. The fact that they go on to score almost helps him. It's just a natural reaction on the line that you want to stop things quickly."

This view was something which Man City fans certainly agreed with as Liverpool aim to jump above the Blues to lead by two points ahead of City's clash against Leicester City on Monday night.
