Liverpool get Aston Villa in Carabao Cup quarter-final draw

Liverpool have been drawn away to Aston Villa in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.

The Reds reached the last eight with a dramatic 5-4 penalty shoot-out win over Arsenal after a 5-5 draw with the Gunners at Anfield on Wednesday night.

Liverpool and Aston Villa last played each other on February 14 2016 in what was a Valentine's Day Massacre for the Midlands outfit as they were beaten 6-0 on their own turf but they will face each other again this Saturday in the Premier League.

The Reds overall record in the fixture is played 191, won 94, drawn 40 and lost 57.

The sides have only ever met once in the League Cup previously when a last minute winner from Danny Murphy handed Liverpool a 4-3 victory at Villa Park on December 18 2002.

Liverpool have won the competition on a record number of eight occasions but given that the quarter-final ties are set to take place in the week commencing December 16 – when the Champions League winners are heading out to Qatar for the FIFA Club World Cup.

The current schedule means the earliest free midweek in which the Reds can play is the date presently set for the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg – the week beginning January 6 2020.

After progressing, Jurgen Klopp warned that his side could be forced to withdraw from the Carabao Cup if an appropriate date is not found for them to play.

The Liverpool manager said: “The Premier League tells us we have to play in the Premier League, which we do obviously.

“The Carabao Cup, what we did tonight, if they don't find an appropriate place for us, not 3am on Christmas Day, then we don't play it.

“They have to make that decision. You have to think about these things.”
