Liverpool forward Sadio Mane tests positive for Covid-19

Liverpool have confirmed that Sadio Mane is self-isolating after testing positive for Covid-19.

The Senegalese joins team-mate Thiago Alcantara in being sidelined by coronavirus, the Spain international's positive result having been revealed earlier this week.

Mane faces a period of self-isolation as he recovers, meaning he will miss Sunday’s visit to Aston Villa and will be unable to report for international duty.

A statement read: "The forward, who started and scored in Monday’s 3-1 victory over Arsenal, has displayed minor symptoms of the virus but feels in good health overall."

Summer signing Kostas Tsimikas also reportedly tested positive for Covid-19 last month after linking up with the Greece squad during the previous international break.

Liverpool's first game back after the latest round of international games is a trip to in-form Everton on October 17, for which Mane will be available should he not return a second positive result.

Mane will hope to be involved, along with Thiago, for the Goodison Park trip before the squad fly out to Amsterdam to face Ajax for the start of their Champions League campaign three days later.
