Liverpool forward puts pen to paper on new Anfield contract

Luis Longstaff has signed a new deal at Liverpool that will extend his Anfield commitment until at least 2022.

Longstaff is one of several youngsters to have broken into the first-team fold with the Reds this season.

The 19-year-old attacker made his senior debut in an unaccustomed central striker role in the Carabao Cup quarter-final at Aston Villa in December.

Longstaff had been among the substitutes for the 2-0 win at MK Dons in the third round of the competition in October.

The forward, who was signed from Newcastle United in 2015, has continued to make progress at the Academy.

Longstaff came off the bench to help Liverpool win the FA Youth Cup last season and has become a regular for the under-23s since making the step up this campaign. The teenager, who can play on both flanks, featured prominently in the UEFA Youth League and scored twice in the 7-0 home win over Napoli.

He has been among the Academy players Jurgen Klopp has occasionally promoted to Melwood to train with the first team.

And with the senior squad soon moving to join the youngsters in being based in Kirkby, Longstaff is looking forward to more opportunities to impress the Reds boss.

"That’s going to be brilliant," he said to liverpoolfc.com. "Melwood is such a great and historic place. Now every day they will be in the same building and being in and around them will be a great thing.

"Hopefully the amount of chances you get to train together might go up a bit with us all being together. I’m looking forward to that and if the chance does come up then you just have to take it.

"Being around them is going to be great, just to learn how they conduct themselves will be good as well."
