Liverpool forced to switch pre-season training plans after government decision

Liverpool are set to return to Melwood after what has likely been the shortest off-season the players have ever experienced since turning professional.

The final game of the Premier League campaign took place on July 26 due to the disruption COVID-19 caused to the competition, with matches having been suspended between March and June.

The pandemic, in turn, caused the opening games of the 2020/21 season to be pushed back and the Charity Shield - in which the Reds will play Arsenal at Wembley - to be rearranged for August 29 in just over two weeks' time.

The ECHO understands that most players are likely to join back up with Jurgen Klopp at Melwood tomorrow (August 15), with new signing Kostas Tsimikas among them, as pre-season commences ahead of the 2020/21 season.

That means the Reds will be getting ready to go again and defend their top-flight crown just 20 days after their final game in the 2019/20 campaign.

It is also understood that a warm-weather training camp in Evian was set to take place next week as part of preparations for the new season.

However, it was announced on Thursday by the UK Government that France will be added to the UK's list of countries requiring people to isolate for 14 days after returning - starting this Saturday.

Sources at the club say a training camp in Evian was never Liverpool's only option and the club put contingency plans in place with the foresight something like this might happen.

Therefore, the Reds will still travel abroad to train next week and are considering bases in Germany and Austria.

The training camp is being designed to make sure everyone keeps within the quarantine rules and can still play and work upon the conclusion of pre-season.

The first round of fixtures for the new Premier League season are due to kick-off on Saturday, September 12, and Liverpool will find out who they are meeting on the opening day of the season on August 21 - when details of all 380 top-flight fixtures will be released.
