Liverpool follow in Nottingham Forest's footsteps as they prepare for Champions League final

Liverpool have opted to prepare for next Saturday’s Champions League final at the same training facility Nottingham Forest utilised last summer.

Under Aitor Karanka, the Reds spent a week at the Marbella Football Centre as they prepared for the new Championship campaign.

Jurgen Klopp and his Reds jetted off to the popular Spanish resort on Monday, as the German steps up the preparation for the European showpiece occasion in Madrid against Tottenham Hotspur.

He believes Marbella provides the perfect location for his players to prepare for the final, away from the glare that would surround them back in England.

It’s not the first time this year Klopp has taken his players to the Costa del Sol.

He took them to the Spanish destination earlier in the year to give them a break ahead of a busy conclusion to the Premier League season, admitting Marbella gave them a perfect environment to prepare.

“We could train hard,” he said back in February.

“We can do the right things; in football that's very often combined with intensity because you cannot always do only the tactical stuff – move a bit left, move a bit right. You have to mix it up and create situations like they are in a game.

“We're really often together and people might say: "So why go to a place where you are always together?"

"But the boys do different things together, the coaches and I don't have to think about how they spend the time between sessions.

“Here we control everything, which is nice. The boys like it as well – it's not that we do it for three weeks, it's four days. It's immediately a little push for all the things we have to do during the week.

"I like it a lot.”

For their part, Forest are expected to return to Spain in July as part of their own pre-season preparations prior heading off to Greece.

The Reds are expected to face Peterborough in La Manga before flying out to face Atromitos and Olympiacos the following week.

They’ll then return to England to continue the build-up to the new campaign with games away at Lincoln City and Mansfield Town.
