Liverpool fitness boost as Joel Matip and Xherdan Shaqiri return to training

Liverpool have been handed a major fitness boost after Xherdan Shaqiri and Joel Matip both returned to first-team training.

Shaqiri has been out since late December after picking what the club described as a 'minor muscle issue' in the build-up to a 1-0 win over Wolves at Anfield.

Matip, meanwhile, has missed much of the last three months due to a knee problem aggravated by an early return to action at Old Trafford in October.

However, the pair were photographed alongside their teammates at the Reds' Melwood training base on Tuesday afternoon as they close in on a comeback.

The news comes as a boost to Jurgen Klopp following a gruelling festive fixture period that saw his squad options decimated by injury.

Dejan Lovren (hamstring) and Fabinho (ankle) remain sidelined, while Naby Keita (groin) and James Milner (hamstring) have recently joined them in the treatment room.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain also missed a number of Christmas games as a result of an ankle problem picked up at the Club World Cup before returning against Everton last weekend.
