Liverpool FC tribute left for man who fell to his death from bonfire

A Liverpool football shirt was spotted in a line of floral tributes for a man who died after falling from a bonfire.

The Liverpool FC shirt with 'Gerrard' on the back was tied to a fence along with floral tributes for Northern Irish man John Steele. The row of tributes were left in the Antiville estate in Larne, Northern Ireland for Mr Steele, across who died after falling from a bonfire.

Mr Steele was helping construct the towering bonfire when the incident happened on Saturday, July 9. The bonfire made from wooden pallets was stacked more than 50ft high.

The bonfire was one of around 250 built in loyalist areas across Northern Ireland ahead of traditional Eleventh Night celebrations on July 11. The fires are lit the day before the Protestant loyal order parading season on July 12.

The bonfire in Antiville was close to completion when the incident happened. The bonfire was dismantled on Sunday morning following Mr Steele's death.

Mr Steele, a dad-of-two in his 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene. On Sunday people lay flowers and tied the LFC shirt and the flag of the Cairncastle Flute Band on a fence next to the bonfire.

A minute's silence was held at a vigil last night and the flute band played several songs. Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Alderman Noel Williams, expressed his “deep sympathy” and extended his condolences following the death.

The mayor said: “The loss of a young man’s life in an accident at a bonfire site in Larne is shocking and my thoughts are with his heartbroken loved ones. The community is hurting and my prayers are with everybody impacted by this awful tragedy.”
