Liverpool FC stars including Jordan Henderson and James Milner to see £65,000 horse debut

Five Liverpool players will be hoping their new horse scores on its debut at Leicester this afternoon.

Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson are supporting Mr McCann.

Named after Anfield press officer Matt McCann, the colt cost the players and Adam Lallana £65,000 from the sales.

A son of Kodiac, the two-year-old races in the British Stallion Studs EBF Novice Stakes (1.25) at Leicester, over the minimum distance of five furlongs.

In the sprint race, the Tom Dascombe-trained Mr McCann has five rivals – and the players will have plenty to cheer if he has the speed to lead them home.

Dascombe runs his operation from a yard called Manor House Stables in Cheshire, which is owned by former Liverpool striker Michael Owen.

Bookmakers have Mr McCann at odds of around 5-1 in the betting market for the race, which opens the card.

Owen, who owns a horse named Red Power with Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson, told the Racing Post : "It's great a few of the lads have decided to get involved in racing.

"We've been keeping them regularly updated on their horse's progress and a couple of them have been down to Manor House Stables to meet him and watch him on the gallops."

The jockey who will ride Mr McCann, Richard Kingscote, has red silks to wear – in a nod to the Liverpool shirt.

Dascombe said Mr McCann might benefit from the outing, but he has been pleased with his progress at home.

"He's a £65,000 breeze-up horse who we liked at the sales and he has done nothing wrong since he's been here," he added.

"I'm sure that like a lot of our horses he'll improve for the run, and I'll be very disappointed if his owners don't have some fun with him.

"We had a bit of a laugh on Saturday as we galloped Mr McCann upsides Sir Alex Ferguson's two-year-old Red Power, so we had Liverpool versus Manchester United.

"I'm not going to say which side won!"

Henderson and Alexander-Arnold are in Gareth Southgate's provisional 33-man England squad for the delayed Euro 2020 tournament.

The Liverpool captain's daughters have taken up horse riding, with some inspiration from top jockey Hollie Doyle.

The pair finished in the places in the 2020 Sports Personality of the Year competition, behind the winner Lewis Hamilton.

Milner has had an interest in racing for some time and enjoyed some luck at this year's Cheltenham Festival.

He won money by backing Mrs Milner, the 12-1 winner of the Pertemps Network Final Handicap Hurdle.

The former England midfielder told his Twitter followers about his successful bet and confirmed he was not one of the horse's owners.

He also joked that his wife Amy wanted his winnings, with a series of emojis accompanying his post.
