Liverpool FC star Virgil van Dijk names Man City player most difficult opponent

Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk has admitted that Sergio Aguero is the most difficult striker he has ever had the displeasure of marking.

Van Dijk, who has been nominated for a Ballon D’or alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi for his colossal performances, paid a huge compliment to the City striker - explaining to TalkSport that the Argentine still remains a nightmare to come up against.

The pair last battled it out in the Premier League during Manchester City’s 2-1 victory over Liverpool at the Etihad last season, a match where Aguero gave Van Dijk and his team-mates the slip to gift City a crucial lead.

Widely regarded as the best defender in world football at the moment, it says a lot that his most difficult opponent to date has been none other than the City man, who managed to bag 21 goals and eight assists in the league last season.

City and Liverpool were involved in one of the most intense title races in Premier League history last campaign, with Aguero and Van Dijk at the forefront of their side’s title chases.

The Reds defender had a brief taste of a potential title win on the last day of the season until his attacking rival equalised for City against Brighton.

The rest is history, with City almost immediately equalising and eventually going on to win the final game 4-1; retaining the Premier League for the first time.

Man City and Liverpool next do battle on 9 November when the Blues travel to Anfield for another blockbuster encounter.
