Liverpool FC star Jordan Henderson admits he was not close to Kevin De Bruyne in performance level

Liverpool star Jordan Henderson has revealed that he voted for Kevin De Bruyne in the PFA Player of the Year awards.

The Anfield skipper pipped Manchester City ace De Bruyne to the Football Writers’ Association trophy, much to the annoyance of many Blues fans.

But the Belgium star, likely to line up against Henderson in the Nations League clash with England tonight, won the vote of his fellow pros.

Henderson, who won his award partly as a result of his captaincy of the Premier League champions and his community work, said that he was one of the players who voted for his midfield rival.

“I voted for Kevin in the PFA awards and couldn’t speak highly enough of him as a player,” said Henderson.

“He deservedly won PFA Player of the Year. I thought he was outstanding last season. But he’s been outstanding for a long time.

“He’s a world-class player, probably the best midfield player in the world. I feel as though he’s classy on and off the pitch.”

Henderson went on to say that it was the Liverpool team’s achievement which led to his own award, and that based on his individual performance he would not have been close to winning the award.

“I’m very honoured and proud to have won it and don’t want to take that away,” he said.

“But I felt it was more to do with the team and what we achieved over that year. I was a very small part of that. That’s how I took the award.

“It was definitely a team effort. Without that, I wouldn’t have even been close to getting it.”
