Liverpool FC offer apology to Man City over incident in academy game

Liverpool have written to Manchester City to apologise after former manager Roy Evans made an offensive remark on commentary during an Under-18s game.

The two clubs went up against each other on Saturday and it was an excellent 3-1 victory for the Blues under the new management of Carlos Vicens, with young striker Tai Sodje netting a hat-trick before the home team scored a late consolation.

However, coverage of the game on LFC TV stood out for the wrong reasons thanks to Evans. After City's midfielder Darko Gyabi - an England youngster born in London and signed from Millwall - had taken a shot during the match, the ex-Liverpool boss mused that there were "not many normal names".

The comment was immediately picked up on by those that heard it. As the Mail reports, Liverpool moved quickly to apologise to City for the remark. It remains to be seen if there will be a public apology from the club for the incident or if the private correspondence will be deemed sufficient.

Relations between Liverpool and City have been strained in recent years as the two clubs have emerged as the two dominant forces in English football, notably this year over Liverpool getting involved in City's case against UEFA at the Court of Arbitration for Sport despite their participation in Europe being entirely unaffected by any decision.

Pep Guardiola's side must recover quickly on the pitch to keep pace with their rivals after suffering a 5-2 defeat to Leicester on Sunday in their first home game of the Premier League campaign.
