Liverpool FC manager Jurgen Klopp breaks silence on Manchester United fan protests

Jurgen Klopp says Manchester United fans have every right to protest against issues they feel strongly about, but the Liverpool manager believes they went too far with their actions last weekend.

United's Premier League meeting with Liverpool was postponed last Sunday when fans gathered outside Old Trafford, while hundreds congregated outside the team's hotel at The Lowry, where United's coaches were unable to leave for the stadium.

The game was originally due to kick off at 4.30pm but the nature of the protest, which saw hundreds of fans break into Old Trafford and storm the pitch, eventually saw the match postponed as fans gathered to voice their opposition to the Glazer family's ownership.

United will now face Liverpool next Thursday night in the rearranged fixture and speaking after the confirmation Klopp broke his silence on the events from a week ago.

“We saw some pictures to see what was going on," he told reporters at his press conference on Friday. "I’m an absolute believer in democracy, which means I’m happy that people want to say their opinion. That’s completely fine.

“But I know in situations like that it doesn’t happen too often that nobody gets hurt.

“That’s why I said a week before, when all the pundits were going and asking for protests and stuff like this, that we have to all be careful and calm down, to ask for the right things.

“I don’t know exactly what happened there, but I heard some policemen got injured.

“These kinds of things should not happen, for sure. They should not break down the doors and stuff like this.

“To tell your opinion, to tell the world what you think about something, that’s completely fine – as long as it’s completely peaceful.

“It was, as far as I know, not completely peaceful. Then it’s not right anymore.”
