Liverpool FC legend Jamie Carragher takes swipe at Man City after UEFA ban is overturned

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has stated that Manchester City's name has not been cleared despite their successful appeal to overturn a two-year ban from UEFA competitions.

Pep Guardiola's side will play in the Champions League again next season following the decision, which led to criticisms from the likes of Jose Mourinho and Jurgen Klopp.

Carragher has now become the latest figure to take a swipe at City, pointing out their troubles on the field and suggesting the suspicion of foul play will not go away.

"They have still lost nine games this season, which just tells you that money isn't everything, nine teams have beaten them," he told Sky Sports.

"Man City, with the money that they have, haven't won the Champions League, so they're not actually completely dominating really.

"Will it have an effect on the pitch? Will the suspicion that they have done something or have got away with something go away? I don't think so it will as everyone has seen emails in the press in the last six to 12 months and people have made their mind up.

"Yes, they have gone to court and won but I don't think that suspicion will ever go away so I don't think they have fully cleared their name in the eyes of people up and down the country.

"Whether that helps the players, they don't have to worry that they might miss out on the Champions League, so they may improve and they certainly need to improve for next season."

Carragher, however, disagreed with Klopp's view that the verdict was a "bad day for football".

He said: "For me, it was more of a good day than a bad day. I've never been a big believer in Financial Fair Play in that I don't want to see the same clubs year in year out going for the league.

"I think City coming in in the last decade and taking Chelsea and Manchester United out the way to be probably the dominant force of the last decade has been good for football. When Chelsea came in and broke up the Arsenal and United domination it was good and I have no problem with it at all.

"I hope Everton are allowed to invest more, Newcastle if the Saudi takeover happens, more teams involved that have genuine chance and hope of doing things at the top end of the PL.

"What are their supporters supposed to do - just expect sixth for the rest of their lives? See a team that finishes 10th, 11th, never win a trophy? Teams like Everton, who are a huge club in this country, go 25 years without a trophy?

"Manchester City went more than 25 years without a trophy and I don't like to see that, I'd rather see trophies spread around. The only way that can possibly happen is if clubs get investment."
