Liverpool FC legend Graeme Souness springs surprise on Raheem Sterling vs Sadio Mane debate

Graeme Souness has offered a shock opinion on whether he would prefer Raheem Sterling or Sadio Mane in his team.

Both players have been in sensational form recently, with Sterling netting a hat-trick for Manchester City against Brighton & Hove Albion to take him to 17 Premier League goals this season.

When discussing the topic post-match on Sky Sports, Liverpool legend Souness said he would have to pick Sterling due to the fact the City star is slightly younger than his Anfield counterpart.

Souness said: "I think Sterling as he's younger.

"They've got similar qualities and, for me, Sterling is already at Mane's level.

"Mane's a proper warrior, you'd take him seven days a week, he could get in anyone's team and they'd all want him.

"Right now, Mane's there, he's 28, but Raheem's 25, so there's still another three years before he reaches his peak.

"That's why he's slightly ahead of him."

In an interesting twist, former City defender Micah Richards went the other way, revealing that he would currently take Mane, but only because Liverpool won the Premier League this season.

He said: "It's difficult because, if I say Sterling, everyone's going to say I'm biased.

"For me, I think they're at the same level at this time but, because Liverpool have won the league and he's done it more this season in more important games, I'd have to just give it to Mane at this moment in time.

"In terms of quality, I think they're both at a similar level."
