Liverpool FC legend backs Man City for Premier League title victory

Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson has backed Man City to win the Premier League over his former side.

City and Liverpool are neck-and-neck as the business end of the season approaches, with Liverpool currently leading the way at the top of the table by a point.

The Reds have played a game more than City, though the Blues' game in hand is an unpredictable derby fixture against fierce rivals Manchester United.

City could retake the lead when the Premier League returns on Saturday when they face relegation fodder Fulham in the early kick-off.

Liverpool don't play until 4:30pm on Sunday afternoon and they have the tough task of playing Tottenham Hotspur, knowing that a slip up will give City a massive advantage.

Never one to shy away from a bold prediction, Lawrenson has backed City to beat out his former side.

Danilo reveals which team he wants Man City to face in Champions League final

"If I was a betting man, and you know that I’m not, I would have a pound on Manchester City winning it,” Lawrenson, who played over 250 games for Liverpool, told Premier League Productions.

Not only do Liverpool still have to play Spurs, but they also have to face Chelsea - the team which they lost to costing them the title in 2014.

The Merseyside outfit have only won the league title once since Lawrenson hung up his boots and the pundit can see his old side slipping up against both London clubs.

Six key Man City squad decisions Pep Guardiola has to make in the summer

“Everyone says you’ve got easier fixtures, well they’re only easy if you’re playing well," he added.

“And they’ve got both Tottenham, this weekend, and Chelsea at home.

“If Tottenham and Chelsea come and play really well, you could see them both nicking a point.

“But the way they’re playing the two of them, the points count between the two of them will be sensational by the time the season finishes, probably the best ever.”

Lawrenson also cited City's previous title triumph experience as a possible deciding factor, describing it as a 'little bit' of a benefit.

“Obviously everyone’s fully aware now 1990 was the last time Liverpool won the title," he added.

“It’s brought up every year and it’s ‘Does Klopp need to win a trophy to keep his job?’.

“No, as long as he gets in the Champions League positions which he already is. It’s not an issue.”
