Liverpool FC handed fresh injury concern ahead of busy festive Premier League fixture period

Liverpool have suffered a fresh injury blow with defender Joel Matip set to undergo another scan on his knee ahead of a busy period of fixtures in the Premier League .

The Cameroonian has been out of action since suffering a problem during the draw against Manchester United in October and Jurgen Klopp hoped to welcome the defender back into the fold after the international break.

However, as reported by The Mirror , there has been a problem and the defender has been unable to return to training with crucial fixtures against Napoli and Everton on the horizon.

The Liverpool defender will head for another scan later in the week to get further assessment on the issue.

Klopp said on his injury: "This week we have kind of a reassessment scan where you have a look at how it improved.

"But there’s nothing you can really do a lot. You have to wait until the body is doing the job pretty much.

"And we will see that, then we’ll know more. He looks fine but is not able to play and not able to train at the moment."

Winger Mohamed Salah also had an issue prior to the international break and was an unused substitute during the win against Crystal Palace.

Klopp revealed the forward is back in training and could feature in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Liverpool currently hold a nine point lead over Manchester City heading into the Christmas fixtures and face Brighton, Everton, Bournemouth and Watford before travelling to Qatar to compete in the Club World Cup.

City face Newcastle, Burnley, Manchester United, Arsenal and Leicester in their next five league games as they look to close the gap at the top of the standings heading into the New Year.
