Liverpool FC great compares Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes to Man City pair

Liverpool great Graeme Souness has compared Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes to Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva of Manchester City .

Fernandes has made a strong start to life at United since his January transfer window switch from Sporting Lisbon.

The 25-year-old has provided an important spark to the United midfield and offered that creative option which the club had severely needed.

But ahead of the clash at home to City, Souness has suggested that the Portugal international has a way to go before he can be talked about on the same level as Blues' stars De Bruyne and Silva.

"If Bruno Fernandes proves as successful a signing for Manchester United as Bernardo Silva has at Manchester City, then Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be delighted," Souness explained in his column for The Sunday Times .

"Let's take a step back from all the hype surrounding Fernandes since United signed him from Sporting Lisbon in late January. He is promising, looks like he always wants the ball and is playing with a lot of confidence.

"If he sustains all that over several seasons, not just a few games, he'll be a successful signing, but we'll have to wait and see.

"Fernandes maybe lacks an extra yard of pace - that change of gear that Kevin De Bruyne has - but possesses the fabulous technique that all the best Portuguese players have.

"It's his willingness to work and take the ball all over the pitch that singles him out as someone for whom United have been crying out.

"He's got qualities that they have been missing in midfield and has already suggested he's an upgrade on what they had in that department."
