
Liverpool FC and Portugal National Team footballer Diogo Jota, 28, and his brother, André Silva, 26, have died in a car crash in Spain, Spanish authorities have confirmed.
Jota and his brother were reportedly travelling in a Lamborghini on the A-53 in the province of Zamora on Thursday at 12.30am (local time), before the car crashed and burst into flames, ABC News reports.
Per the publication, the Guardian Civil confirmed that the car “left the road” after a tyre had blown out while overtaking another vehicle.
Spanish police said it was investigating the cause of the crash and confirmed that no other vehicles were involved in the tragic incident.
“The information we have so far is that the car, which was a Lamborghini, was in a road traffic accident and left the road due to a tyre blowout while overtaking,” a statement read, per ABC News.
“The car caught on fire and the two occupants were killed.”
Liverpool FC, who Jota played and won this season English Premier League with, released a statement confirming the news, describing the brothers’ deaths as an “unimaginable loss”.
“Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota,” it wrote.

“The club have been informed that the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre,” the statement continued.
“Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss.”
The Portuguese National Team also issued an official statement regarding the tragic loss, remembering Jota as a “fantastic” and “respected” player.
“The Portuguese Football Federation and the entire Portuguese football community are devastated by the deaths of Diogo Jota and André Silva in Spain this morning,” it penned.

“Diogo Jota was not only a fantastic player with almost 50 caps for the national team, but also an extraordinary person who was respected by all his teammates and opponents. He had a contagious joy and was a reference point in his own community.
“The Portuguese Football Federation would like to offer the deepest condolences to the families and friends of Diogo and André, as well as Liverpool FC and FC Penafiel, the respective clubs of the players.”
The national team also confirmed that it will be holding a minute of silence ahead of Portugal’s team match against Spain at the Women’s European Championships.
“We have lost two champions. Their deaths represent irreparable losses for Portuguese football, and we will do everything we can to honour their legacy every day.”
Silva’s team, FC Penafiel, has yet to issue a statement. However, supporters have flooded its social media with messages of prayers and condolences.
Rest in peace, Jota and Silva. Truly a major loss.
