Liverpool FC fan turns old football kits into "glamorous" shirts

A Wirral fashion designer has started turning old football kits into "glamorous" shirts.

Patrick McDowell, 24, is working with fellow designer Sophie Hird, 25, on giving new life to old football jerseys by transforming them into the bold looks.

Patrick, who went to St Mary’s Catholic College, in Wallasey, was once a finalist on the BBC television show Young Apprentice.

Speaking to the ECHO about the eye-catching designs, he said: "I met Sophie in fashion week in February, and her whole business is she takes old football jerseys and repurposes them so I bought a western shirt from her made out of an old Liverpool jersey, like a cowboy shirt.

"I thought it would be nice to create a collection with Sophie out of old Liverpool and Everton kits as in my family my dad’s an Evertonian and I’m a Liverpool fan.

"I always base my collections on stuff to do with my family. They all live on the Wirral so it’s always got a lot of things to do with Liverpool ladies, the glam and the big hair.

"I also work with upcycled materials so I’m going to add the glamour and use recycled Swarovski crystals as sparkles as they are also very Liverpool.

"It’s about mixing the masculine and the feminine."

Patrick is appealing to fans of both clubs to donate their old kits so that they can be given new life as pieces in his fashion collection.

He said: "If people have some old kits and they are happy to donate, they can just email me and we can arrange an address to send the kits and we can cover the postage.

"The idea is if you support Everton you can send all your old Everton jerseys and we can make something for you.

"The aim is to show the collection at a sustainable week event in Finland in July, but at the moment with things being up in the air it could be a bit later in the year."
