Liverpool FC bet wins £21,000 for Manchester United fan from £20 stake

A Manchester United fan bagged £21,000 off the back of a £20 bet on rivals Liverpool FC.

Wayne Jones' incredible flutter involved a £20 stake - but he walked away with £21,420 after correctly predicting that Alexandre Lacazette would score first and Liverpool would beat Arsenal 3-1 in their Premier League clash on September 28.

The 61-year-old North Wales grandad's bet came in at 125/1 with Betfred – and the Manchester Evening News reports that he also backed Jack Grealish to score first at Fulham on the same night - which was priced at 15/2.

Explaining the thinking behind his bet, Wayne said: “I had a very busy day working the high-rise cranes in North Wales, and I only had 10 minutes or so to get these two bets on.

“I was checking out the games quickly, and thought Grealish would score first because he’d be looking to get selected for England.

“Regarding the game at Anfield, I always think that Lacazette takes three or four games to get into his stride and that Virgil van Dijk always starts slowly. That was my thinking."

He added: “Even though I’m a big Manchester United supporter I know that Liverpool are more than capable of getting back into the game, even if they go behind early on.

“You have to be realistic and accept that Liverpool as champions are far better than United at the moment. Eventually we will get back, but not necessarily this season!”

But despite winning big, Wayne doesn't intend on splashing the cash on luxury items or exotic holidays. In fact, he's only planning on treating himself to some new running shoes.

It will be Wayne’s children who will benefit the most, with 19-year-old daughter Kirsty being treated to a second-hand Volkswagen Polo, and 24-year-old son Liam getting a new moped – while 26-year-old daughter Katherine is getting a Peugeot run-around.

Lucky Wayne, who lives in Maes Derw, put his bet on at the Betfred shop on Conway Road, Llandudno Junction.

And it's not the first time Wayne has won big on a flutter, having bagged £7,000 with an extraordinary bet on the Manchester derby two years ago.

In 2018 he gambled £10 that Manchester United would beat City 3-2 and Chris Smalling would score the winner at odds of 700-1.
