Liverpool fans will hope history repeats itself against Aston Villa in the League Cup

Liverpool have been drawn away to Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

And the trip to Villa Park could prove to be a good omen for the Reds.

Liverpool last met Villa at this stage in the League Cup in 2002/03 in what was a memorable 4-3 thriller.

Gerard Houllier’s team found themselves 3-1 up and cruising thanks to goals from Danny Murphy, Milan Baros and Steven Gerrard.

But Villa fought their way back into the tie to make it 3-3.

Danny Murphy’s last minute-winner eventually sealed a spot in the semi-finals for the Reds.

And Liverpool fans will be well aware that their side went on to win the cup that season.

After beating Sheffield United in the semi-finals, Houllier’s men met Alex Ferguson's Manchester United in a showdown which was held at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium.

Liverpool lifted the trophy that afternoon thanks to a 2-0 win over United, with goals coming from Steven Gerrard and Michael Owen.

Jurgen Klopp’s team will head to Villa Park full of confidence after beating Arsenal in the fourth round.

And history could be on their side as they have a chance to use the tie to propel them to League Cup glory once again.
