Liverpool fans warned not to leave hotels to eat or drink during Napoli trip amid safety fears

Liverpool supporters travelling to Naples next week are being warned by police not to leave their hotels to eat or drink amid safety fears.

The reigning European champions are scheduled to begin the defence of their trophy with an opening group game away at Napoli on September 17.

However, those who plan on following their team to the Italian port city have been advised to exercise caution during their stay.

A Liverpool fan was hospitalised after being attacked in Naples the night before the sides' group-stage meeting last term.

Reports of further violence outside Stadio San Paolo also surfaced prior to the hosts claiming a 1-0 victory through Lorenzo Insigne's late goal.

Merseyside Police are once again offering shuttle buses to the ground for visiting supporters, which will depart from Stazione Marittima at 3.30pm on the day of the game.

Meanwhile, those arriving in the days before the match are advised not to eat or drink outside of their hotels, to avoid wearing club colours, and to remain vigilant to the threat of theft, robbery and assault.

The Reds have sold out their 2,558-ticket allocation for the match but, as was the case for last season's game, expect fewer fans to make the trip to Italy.
