Liverpool fans spot difference between Virgil van Dijk and Cristiano Ronaldo Ballon d'Or reaction

Liverpool fans have spotted a difference between Virgil van Dijk and Cristiano Ronaldo's reactions to missing out on the Ballon d'Or.

Paris Saint-Germain forward Lionel Messi was awarded the prize for a record seventh time at the ceremony in the French capital on Monday night.

Ronaldo has won the prize five times, the last time was in 2017 while he was still at Real Madrid.

However, the Manchester United star liked and commented on a social media post that indicates he is unhappy with where he finished in this year's standings.

The post listed the Portuguese international's achievements over the last year and suggested Messi is 'favoured'.

Ronaldo replied to the instagram post from the @cr7.o_lendario fan page saying: "Factos" followed by a thumbs up and wandering eyes emoji.

Although, the 36-year-old shared in a previous Instagram post: "I always congratulate those who win, within sportsmanship and fair play that guided my career from the beginning and I do so because I'm never against anyone."

Ronaldo finished sixth in this year's rankings, behind the likes of Robert Lewandowski, Karim Benzema, Jorginho and N'Golo Kante.

Liverpool fans noticed a stark contrast between Ronaldo's reaction this year and Van Dijk's reaction to finishing as a runner-up behind Messi in 2019.

The defender shared a classy message after the awards two years ago, and admitted he was proud to be in the company of Messi and Ronaldo as one of the top players in the world.

"It was a great privilege to attend the 2019 Ballon d'Or last night," he wrote on Instagram.

"I was humbled by the warm reception that I received in Paris and I'd like to say thank you to everyone who made us feel so welcome.

"Firstly I'd like to congratulate Leo [Messi] on winning your historic sixth Ballon d'Or. As I also said last night at the ceremony, it's important to sit back and admire greatness when it's in front of you.

"Congratulations on another incredible year. On a personal level it was an honour to be nominated and I am extremely proud to have come second and in the same company as two of the greatest players to ever play the game in Messi and Ronaldo."
