Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard's return to Anfield with Aston Villa ended in a 1-0 defeat, the two sides separated only by a Mohamed Salah penalty.
Gerrard brought his side to Liverpool and set up defensively, dropping deeper and deeper as the game wore on.

Liverpool fans and Fabinho's wife send message to referee Stuart Attwell over Aston Villa game
The Reds may have been awarded the winning penalty against Villa, but Liverpool supporters were left aggrieved with the performance of referee Stuart Attwell.
There was a number of penalty claims from Jurgen Klopp's side in the first-half, all of which were waved on by the official.
Villa certainly would've regretted their time wasting antics after going a goal down with just 20 minutes left to play, but not a single player was booked despite frustration from both the crowd and Liverpool bench.
Fabinho's wife Rebeca Tavares, as well as supporters, took to social media during the match to vent their frustrations with the referee.
