Liverpool fans' 'Scouse Queen' Ulla Klopp prepares for FA Cup final after contract influence

By Alex Richards

Ulla Klopp. Scouse Queen.

Four words emblazoned across a banner, unveiled during Liverpool's recent Champions League semi-final triumph over Villarreal. The reason? Mrs Klopp’s decisive role in her husband’s decision to sign a new contract, keeping him at Anfield until 2026.

“I stay for another two years, why? Because Ulla wants to stay and as a good husband, what are you doing when your wife wants you to stay? You are staying!” He added, speaking to Liverpoolfc.com : “When I said around the last contract extension, that in 2024 that's it then, it was actually a private agreement and the most important contract in my life I signed is the one with Ulla. That's where it started again.

"We sat in the kitchen at the table and Ulla said, 'I can't see us leaving in 2024.' And I was like, 'What?!' 'No, really, [with] all the people about.' You won't know Lisa, but she is very important for us, it's about Danielle, it's about so many people. That's the first moment and then, of course, it's about the club and all the people I don't know personally but I know as well, so that's how it all started."

It wasn't the first time Ulla had intervened to guide his career; targeted to replace Sir Alex Ferguson as Manchester United manager in 2013 by Ed Woodward, he's understood to have turned down the opportunity to move to Old Trafford after his wife's advice.

"Klopp told me he could have taken over Manchester United, but his wife said it wasn't right. When Liverpool arrived, his wife said it was right," revealed Phil Thompson previously, speaking to Norwegian channel TV2.

Days after the Reds' contract announcement, the Kop boss himself was greeted outside El Madrigal after Liverpool’s 3-2 second leg success by a group of fans with the banner, and couldn’t help but smile and laugh.

On Saturday, Liverpool face Chelsea in the final of the FA Cup looking to claim trophy number two this season, against the same opponents whom they saw off in the League Cup Final in March, via a penalty shootout success.

Ulla was in attendance at Wembley that day and will be again for the reunion with Thomas Tuchel's side. She spent 90 minutes at a beauty salon in Formby on Friday preparing for her latest visit, as Liverpool fans prepare to take over the national stadium once more.

When both survey the scene on Saturday ahead of kickoff, the banner paying homage to Mrs Klopp will be riding high. It is also likely to make its way to Paris in two weeks time for the Champions League Final against Real Madrid.

On both occasions, Ulla can expect to be serenaded by supporters who have changed the lyrics to a song that was originally dedicated to the Liverpool boss since his wife's intervention: "I'm so glad that Ulla loves Scouse, I'm so glad that she's not moving house. Ulla said to Jurg you know, she doesn't want to leave you know, I'm in love with her and I feel fine."

Indeed, at times this season she has been in with the club's travelling support, notably at the recent 2-2 draw with Manchester City at the Etihad. She will be hoping that, in the aftermath on Saturday, her and her husband can toast more silverware.

By the time he takes his side to France for a third European Cup final in five years looking to become European kings for a seventh time, Klopp will know if a first-ever English quadruple is still on the table. He'll be the first to tell you that, without his wife, it wouldn't have been possible.
