Liverpool fans reveal January transfer desire as familiar theme emerges

It’s the January transfer window and once again our lives are awash with rumours and stories about this player or that.

But do Liverpool really need to add to the arrival of Takumi Minamino, who joined on January 1 from Salzburg?

Many do.

For Reds fans, there is no end to the variety of players suggested, but a common theme in the responses over on our Facebook page was for cover at full-back.

One supporter said: “I would get full back cover, someone who can play either full back side and be just as good as Trent/Robertson.”

In particular, the left side of defense may be a concern for Reds fans. With James Milner injured, there could be a hole to fill should first-choice Andy Robertson pick up a knock.

Yasser Larouci impressed in that role in Sunday’s Merseyside derby victory, but the age of 19 there are understandably still questions marks. Perhaps a steady, versatile option who can operate on both flanks might be a more reliable option.

A player who fits the bill and seems a popular choice is Norwich’s Max Aarons, who has attracted reported interest from a variety of Premier League clubs, including from the blue half of Merseyside.

Other suggestions included RB Salzburg’s Maximilian Wober and SC Freiburg’s Gian-Luca Itter.

Injury problems to Matip and Lovren, with the latter also being consistently linked with moves away, have also resulted in some calls for centre-back cover.

Ben White appears to be at the forefront of many Reds’ minds. The Brighton centre-half is currently on loan at Championship leaders Leeds, and his performances has lead to reports of interest from Tottenham and Chelsea, as well as Liverpool.

Elsewhere, Timo Werner is a name that has cropped up in relation to Liverpool for some time now. The German forward is certainly an exciting prospect, but he is said to have concerns over playing time.

He has a point. The front three, and indeed most of the team, are some of the best in the world in their respective roles. Any player linked with Liverpool would have to be a simply outstanding player to oust any of the current crop.

It’s a similar tale all round. If Jurgen Klopp decides any further transfers are necessary this January, increasing an already considerable squad depth will be the primary aim.

It’s a fantastic luxury to have, and with a plethora of young players also proving their worth, you have to look hard to see gaps in the squad.

However, there will always be links. Fans will just have to wait and see what happens, as the web of contracts and agents and deals continues to be spun throughout January.
