Liverpool fans rename Margaret Thatcher Square in Madrid after Jeremy Corbyn

Cheeky Liverpool fans have given Margaret Thatcher square in Madrid a rebrand ahead of the Champions League final against Tottenham.

The Iron Lady is, to put it mildly, not the most popular woman on Merseyside, and Reds decided the plaza looked much better bearing the name of Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn .

The Spanish capital was the first place in the world to name a square after the former Prime Minster.

It was named in 2014 but just a year later Madrid Mayor Manuela Carmena proposed changing the name following a backlash.

Despite that the name remained in place until the Reds decided to do it themselves.

The former Tory PM is deeply unpopular on Merseyside - and particularly in Liverpool - for her treatment of the city in the 1980s.

Her policy towards Liverpool was famously described as 'managed decline' by her cabinet minister Geoffrey Howe.

Paul Doherty, from Walton, was one of those fans involved in the square's 'rebranding'.

He told the Liverpool ECHO : “They commemorate thatcher in Madrid but they don’t really understand what she did to the city and our people.

“Liverpool is Labour, always has been always will be, so we decided to commemorate that with Jezza here."
