Liverpool fans react to Man City VAR controversy as Spurs claim draw

Liverpool fans have been having their say on social media after a controversial 2-2 draw between Manchester City and Tottenham.

Raheem Sterling opened the scoring for the Sky Blues with a header from close range but Erik Lamela's left-footed shot from outside the box tied the contest at 1-1.

Sergio Aguero put City back in front - but a header from substitute Lucas Moura levelled up the match late in the second half.

There was still time for plenty of drama as Gabriel Jesus scored, but the goal was ruled out by VAR due to a handball from Aymeric Laporte.

After Liverpool 's 2-1 win over Southampton this afternoon, the Reds now have a two-point advantage on the reigning Premier League champions after two games of the new season.

With the VAR debate already intensifying just a few games into the campaign, plenty of Liverpool fans have been having their say on the system and how it played out in the City vs Spurs match:

Given the circumstances, plenty of fans were pleased with how VAR worked to deny City all three points.

But many others questioned the new handball rule which allowed VAR to give the decision.

Reds legend Jamie Carragher, in response to those criticising the decision to disallow the goal, summed up the workings of the new rule by tweeting: "Because it’s the new rule on handball! VAR just enforcing it with a second look.

"A handball intentional or not that creates or scores a goal is now disallowed.

"Don’t blame VAR it’s just done what it’s supposed to do."
