Liverpool fans react as referee announced for Boxing Day Leicester clash

Northumberland official Michael Oliver will take charge of Liverpool's game against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on Boxing Day, the PGMOL confirmed today.

The 24-year-old has taken charge of 41 Reds matches over the course of his refereeing career, with the Reds winning 21 of them.

And he last oversaw a defeat for Jurgen Klopp's men in February 2017.

That was against the Foxes in the East Midlands during the season in which they won the Premier League title under the guidance of Claudio Ranieri.

After the announcement regarding refereeing appointments was made, some Reds supporters took to Twitter to celebrate the news.

@Yaserlfc2: Michael Oliver siuuu

@estoesanfield: Possibly the best of the Premier

@almdemo: Great, best ref in League

@NotoriousJOS: Glad Michael Oliver is refereeing the Leicester game. Fans should never care about this, but the rest are so bad that at least with Oliver if you lose/draw its on you and not him

Paul Tierney will be the VAR for the Boxing Day game, which will be live on Amazon Prime in the UK . He will also referee the game versus Sheffield United on Thursday, January 2.

Greater Manchester referee Anthony Taylor has also been confirmed as the official in the middle for the Reds' game against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield on Sunday, December 29.
