Liverpool fans react as Man City defeat to Tottenham leaves 22-point lead intact

Liverpool continue to take big strides towards a first league title in 30 years and the celebrations edged closer to a finale after Manchester City's defeat against Tottenham.

The Reds opened up a 22-point advantage following their 4-0 victory over Southampton on Saturday, though City had the opportunity to cut the lead back to 19 points if they beat Jose Mourinho's Tottenham.

However, City crumbled in their trip to North London as Ilkay Gundogan saw a first-half penalty saved by Hugo Lloris before Oleksander Zinchenko was dismissed in the second period for a second yellow card.

Spurs debutant Steven Bergwijn then opened the scoring, with Son Heung-Min then doubling the advantage for Mourinho's side.

When the final whistle blew, there were not only celebrations for Spurs, who saw their top-four hopes given a boost, but also in Merseyside as Liverpool's comfortable lead got even more emphatic.

The Reds, having dropped just two points all season, now need to drop a further 22 for City to pull back into the title race - which would take at least eight matches and is highly unlikely.

As a result, supporters on social media celebrated a victory which put them even closer towards lifting the Premier League for the first time in the club's history.
