Liverpool fans raise question over Sadio Mane incident in win against Southampton

Some Liverpool fans felt Southampton's Jan Bednarek should have received a red card for his challenge on Sadio Mane in the first half of their Premier League match at Anfield.

The Reds took a 3-0 lead into the break after two goals from Diogo Jota and a deflected effort from Thiago.

Bednarek was pulled up just 11 minutes into proceedings after a challenge on Mane and was subsequently booked by referee Andre Marriner.

Many Liverpool supporters, however, felt the tackle was serious enough to warrant a sending off after he appeared to catch Mane with his studs.

Mane himself was in deep conversation with the referee after the challenge and gestured that there had been a stamp on his leg.

One supporter tweeted: "Only one that thinks that Bednarek challenge could have been a red? Studs showing and high up."

Another posted: "Did that Bednarek tackle on Mane not even get a red card check? Raked down his calf while off the ground."

Mane went on to put the ball in the net after Andy Robertson crossed the resulting free-kick, but he was narrowly denied by the offside flag.

It didn't take long for Liverpool to extend their lead, though, as Jota scored his second of the game on 32 minutes before Thiago found the back of the net five minutes later.

The three first-half goals means Jurgen Klopp's side became the first since Sunderland in 1927 to score at least two goals in 17 consecutive matches.

Virgil van Dijk added a fourth to complete the rout.
